City of the Plain

Modern Sacramento came about as a result of the Gold Rush. Sutter's embarcadero, the site of present Old Sacramento, developed to serve miners and others heading into the Sierra Nevada foothills in search of their fortunes. Information on the early history of the "City of the Plain" can be found at the Discovery Museum's web site www.thediscovery.org, and at the Sacramento Bee's site www.sacbee.com/goldrush/.
