Gold Discovery

The discovery of gold by James Marshall at John Sutter's Coloma sawmill on January 24, 1848 changed life in California forever. Many websites contain information on this event. Marshall's and Sutter's stories of the gold discovery, along with accounts by others, can be found at a commercial web site, www.malakoff.com. The Museum of the City of San Francisco's web site, www.sfmuseum.org, andwww.learncalifornia.org, a site of the California State Archives and Golden State Museum, also contain extensive information about the gold discovery and mining in the Mother Lode during the Gold Rush, as does the PBS web site www.pbs.org/goldrush/.
